New SANS Survey Shows Skill Gap Continues to Hinder SOC Efficiency

Bethesda, MD and Ra’anana, IsraelAugust 13, 2018 – The results of the 2018 SANS Security Operations Survey, a comprehensive study of the state of cybersecurity operations, trends and challenges, were published today. The findings indicate that the industry is in the nascent stages of a technology metamorphosis and must quickly evolve to include the use of cloud, mobile, personal and Industrial IoT. Security operations centers will be called upon to monitor and secure more of the enterprise, take a more active role in responding to threats and be capable of dealing with cyberthreats that are growing both in sophistication and sheer quantity.

The overarching issue in all aspects of SOC management is the human factor. Survey respondents cited “lack of skilled staff’ as the leading barrier to SOC performance. This is further evidence of the mounting cyber skill gap that experts have been warning about in recent years. The second and third leading barriers were “lack of automation and orchestration” and “too many unintegrated tools”. These challenges are also related to the skill shortage, as SOC managers need to find ways to do more with the staff they have.

“All of the leading SOC challenges stem from the lack of skilled staff,” said Cyberbit CEO Adi Dar. “The good news is that technology can solve many of these pain points.” Cyber ranges can improve and shorten training for SOC professionals of all levels and make each individual more effective. Security automation, orchestration and response (SOAR) platforms automate almost every aspect of SOC operations to reduce response times, human error and prevent breaches. SOAR also alleviates the problem of tool overload, by integrating all alert and response tools into one central platform that every member of the SOC team can understand and operate easily.
